How ‘Bout Them Apples!

The roots of Colorado’s apple industry reach back to the 1800s when the state was a premier apple producer, rivaling even Washington state. Orchards produced varieties like Thunderbolt and Nickajack and Colorado Orange before drought and other issues took their toll. Today, even as the number of acres devoted to apples has declined sharply, the efforts to preserve heirloom varieties and revitalize the apple industry is thriving, including efforts by home owners with historical apple trees.
